Bill Williams

Bill Williams is an Austin-based comic book writer, letterer, inker, and publisher whose comic book career began after he earned an art degree from the University of Texas in 1991. Early professional work included short stories and work as an inking assistant, drawing backgrounds on Hammerlock and Vengeance of Vampirella for Keith Wilson. Frustrated by limited opportunities for new talent, he founded Lone Star Press and self-published the anthology Heroic Tales, which ran ten issues distributed by Diamond Comics Distributiors. That series featured his Wonder Woman-inspired feature Amazon with artist Robb Phipps. He also inked and published the Pantheon series developed with Bill Willingham, and a few backup stories starring the characters Blackheart and Valentine.
Through the 2000s and 2010s he took on a wide range of work-for-hire assignments while continuing to wear multiple production hats. Credits include writing Justice League Unlimited and Robin material for DC; Angel and Spike: The Devil You Know, for IDW; and Richie Rich for Ape Entertainment. He also lettered thousands of pages, inked for collaborators, and contributed to books such as Batman ’66 meets Wonder Woman ’77. Those years established him as a reliable utility player who understood every stage of making a comic, from layouts to lettering and crowdfunding and distribution.
Since 2018 his primary focus has been the ongoing Punchline series, co-created with artist Matthew Weldon. The book follows Mel, a battle-scarred former Daughter of Hercules, as she mentors her optimistic replacement Jessie (Versema). Williams writes, often letters, and sometimes inks the series, which has produced multiple collected volumes, Free Comic Book Day editions, and crossovers. In 2026, he also released Page One, Panel One, a 24-page practical guide that distills three decades of lessons on scheduling, crowdfunding, and finishing books. He remains active on the convention circuit and continues to develop new Punchline issues and related projects.

Matthew Weldon
Writer, Penciler, Inker
Matthew Weldon is a Texas-based comic book artist, character designer, and co-creator whose career broke open at Image Comics. After winning a pin-up contest that placed his work in Mark Andrew Smith’s Aqua Leung, he drew short stories with Smith in the Popgun anthology. That partnership became the 2009 graphic novel The New Brighton Archeological Society, an all-ages adventure about the children of famous archaeologists. The book was named MTV Splash Page’s Best All-Ages Comic of 2009 and received two Harvey Award nominations in 2010. He later returned with Smith as artist on Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors Volume 2.
Through the 2010s he worked across licensed and independent publishers as both an interior artist and cover illustrator. Credits include Image, DC/Vertigo, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dynamite/Counterpoint’s Red Sonja vs. Battle Fairy, Overground, Iconic Comics, and Capcom/UDON titles such as Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. His public convention biographies also note two Guinness World Records and appearances on the G4 channel. In 2018 he left a day job and committed to comics full time.
Since then his primary creator-owned work has been Punchline from Antarctic Press, co-created with writer Bill Williams. Weldon designed the series’ heroes—including Mel and Jessie/Versema—and has drawn interiors, covers, and later issues as the book grew from early digital shorts into an ongoing series, collected editions, and Free Comic Book Day 2019. He continues to handle Punchline covers while taking on other high-profile assignments, including interiors and covers for UDON’s Final Fight miniseries and variant covers for Street Fighter Masters and Antarctic Press titles such as Gold Digger.
